I'm David. I created SoloNerds after retiring from the U.S. Navy after 24 years.
My career ran across cybersecurity, distributed systems, systems engineering, R&D, and technical leadership, including CTO and technical lead roles and years as Officer in Charge and team lead of U.S. Navy Cyber Protection Teams. The common thread was systems that had to work, and getting pulled in when they didn't. I've always loved building: web apps, sensors, automation, neural nets, LLM pipelines, anything that turns an idea into something running.
I'm a nerd… but more importantly, I'm a debugger.
The "impossible" problems were usually the ones that landed on my desk. I got good at solving them fast: years in the trenches, reading logs, tracing state, building a mental model of what's actually happening instead of what the docs say should be happening.
Today I split my time between client work and advanced local AI systems and independent engineering research: private, locally hosted LLM systems, generative video pipelines, computer vision, and forensic tooling. Some of it is production. Some of it is experimental, and I'll always tell you which is which.

I started SoloNerds because the current meta is broken. Everywhere you look it's the same loop: sell a course, push a white-label product, promise "amazing apps" with AI to people who don't have the engineering fundamentals to know what they're being handed.
It leaves real business owners holding half-working, AI-generated projects they don't understand, can't maintain, and were sold by people who don't code either. Better marketers. Same snake oil.
So instead of extracting value from that, I built SoloNerds to counter it. Teach people how to engineer the software they're generating. Help businesses apply AI where it actually pays off, and say so when it doesn't. And when something is broken or needs to be built right, do the engineering myself.
It's never just "do it for you" work. When we work together I walk you through what I'm doing, how I'm thinking, and why the code works the way it does, so you're not dependent on me forever.
SoloNerds isn't about selling dreams. It's about engineering, repair, and reality.
We're in the era of AI coding.
And it's incredible. People with no traditional coding background are shipping products. That's not bad. That's progress.
But generating code and engineering an application are not the same thing.
AI can only go as far as the engineer driving it. Put a senior engineer and a new vibe coder on the same AI project, and the senior engineer wins every time, because foundations matter:
System Design
Understanding how pieces fit together, not just making them work in isolation.
Debugging Instincts
Years of reading logs, tracing state, and building mental models of what's actually happening.
Trade-offs
Knowing when to optimize, when to ship, and what corners you can actually cut safely.
Safety + Scalability
Building things that don't just work today. They work when ten times the users show up tomorrow.
…and knowing what to ignore.
You can absolutely use AI to write your code. I do. But you still need to understand what you're building, how the pieces fit together, and which decisions will cost you a rewrite in six months. That's learnable. It just isn't learnable from a prompt.
If you're a business, the same rule applies one level up: AI is worth exactly as much as the problem it solves and the engineering behind it. Part of my job is telling you when an existing model is enough, when a custom system makes sense, and when you shouldn't use AI at all.
When I pop the hood on a failing AI-generated codebase, it's usually the same story:
wires everywhere, duplicated logic, redundant calls, half-refactors, mystery side effects, scary production behavior.
For most people, it takes daysto untangle. For someone who has spent two decades doing exactly this, it's a few focused sessions.
That's what SoloNerds is: one experienced engineer who can jump in, fix what matters, ship clean commits, and explain every one of them.

SoloNerds is run by me, David, and I personally deliver the work. On the rare occasion a narrow piece of work needs a specialist, it happens with your agreement and you will always know who is doing what. Engagements are governed by the Terms of Service for details.
